About Breeding Stock
Understanding EPDs
Birth Weight (BW): Lower values mean easier calving. Important for heifer bulls.
Weaning Weight (WW): Growth potential to weaning age. Higher is better for beef production.
Yearling Weight (YW): Growth to yearling age. Indicates feedlot performance.
Milk (M): Mother's milking ability. Important for replacement heifers.
Marbling (MARB): Intramuscular fat prediction. Higher values for quality grades.
Buying Breeding Stock
Herd Bulls: Select for calving ease, growth, and maternal traits. One bull per 25-30 cows.
Replacement Heifers: Look for maternal traits, fertility records, and structural correctness.
Bred Heifers: Check breeding dates, bull used, and expected calving dates.
